Brownsvillian Billy Tripp, an amazing folk artist with a welding rod, has erected Mind Field, a 40-foot-high steel sculpture that is a work in progress. In a published interview, Tripp claims that he expects the work to take 20-25 more years to finish.
In the meantime, there's plenty to see. It contains steel cut-outs of Tripp's hands and feet, a basketball goal, skulls and crossbones, and hearts. He charges no admission to see Mind Field, which is on U.S. 70 one block from the town square. Visitors are not allowed to walk through the work, but they are welcome to stand outside of it and gaze. Tripp lives in a welding shop behind Mind Field, and if he is not busy he is happy to discuss his work.
Tripp's website has a good Q & A with him and recent photos.
